Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on midweek demanded the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of state military personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the path to complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military personnel preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel in combat attire with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the military facility in the town. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were set up in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, triggering protests, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the federal government, seeking to block the military dispatch, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on Monday banning ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused Trump of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "justify and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, Trump has said he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch regular army in states that are unable to suppress an insurrection or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his second term, Trump has sent or discussed sending military units to at least 10 cities, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is necessary to fight violence and defend immigration agents.

Data indicates that most violent crime across the US has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to under three hundred through August, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on that day revealed that most Americans disapprove of the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
