Lifetime of Income Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Says

Based on fresh analysis, the average earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of salary to reach the net worth of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Widening Financial Divide Across Decades

The study examined wealth distribution information covering the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to reach the wealthiest decile of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist associated with the analysis stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary during their working years would still not be able to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The research revealed that the disparity between the wealth of the typical individual and an individual in the wealthiest decile was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to £1.3m in actual value by recent times.

The analyst continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – people that start life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the financial disparity expanding in absolute terms, the portion of complete net worth in the UK owned by the richest households – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from three times the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

So-called "unearned" increases, through rising house prices and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, as stated in the study.

These appreciations generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the analysis reveals – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Generational Financial Divides

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Geographic Variations

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in recent years standing at 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where housing costs have generally grown substantially, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Impact

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate countless homes were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes performed significantly better, however. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
