European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
